Scholarships & Loans For Students studying Abroad
Cut out for an education abroad but lack the finances? Our Career Counselor gives a step-by-step guide to securing a scholarship that will make your foreign dreams come true
Education abroad is an expensive option. Costs incurred on tuition, room and board are estimated at anywhere between USD $15,000 and $45,000 per year. Foreign nationals are required to show proof of sufficient funds to cover at least the first year of college education to apply for a student visa to any country.
Most governments and universities do not provide student assistance in the form of financial aid to non-citizens except in case of high academic merit. Scholarships rather than financial aid are a realistic way to help students fund their international education. Scholarships are easier to get in the United States than in UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Usually, those who go to Australia and UK are self-funded.
However, competition for scholarships and assistantships is tough. Students, keen on studying abroad, but running low on funds, must work hard to place themselves in the top percentile of their class. Academic scores considered for scholarship range from mark sheets of Standard 9, 10, 11and 12 as well as performance on scholastic exams like the SATs.
At the postgraduate level, academics are reviewed right from standard 10 and 12 board examinations to each semester of the undergraduate examination and GRE or GMAT scores. Only high performers are eligible for scholarships as well as for teaching and research assistantships. This way, you may reduce between 10 and 80 per cent of your tuition costs.
A common notion that a student may take care of his expenses through part time work is false. International students in almost every country are legally allowed only twenty hours of work per week on campus. They are paid a menial amount equivalent to $5 per hour. A serious academic student rarely gets time to work over 10 hours per week. Money earned is usually goes on unaccounted expenses like excursion, field trips and extra pairs of clothes etc.
Educational loans
Students or their families can borrow loans at favourable interest rates from local banks and repay over an extended period of time. But these must be taken after a great deal of thought. Most loans in India come with an annual interest burden of 10 to 12 per cent. Other terms and conditions have been relaxed to a great extent to make quality education accessible to more students. Repayment begins after one year of course completion. However, students and their families must take into consideration that student’s ability to secure a job and earn in dollars to repay the loan depends on whether he or she gets a work permit visa. Careful planning is both necessary and wise.
Loans from trusts within India or abroad have low interest rates (2-4 percent), or are interest-free. Fellowships too are popular, but serious competition makes securing difficult. Many Indian communities in different regions of the world offer scholarships and loans to Indian students. These can be sourced from the local regional council of the University in which the student gains admission.
