What is architecture?

Therefore, to become an architect, you have to beinventive and meticulous with your drawing skills. However, today computers have made the task much easier.
The work
Architecture is not restricted to design buildings;it takes various forms."Architecture is now offering a wide scope of design options," says Suhas Thakare, an architect practising in town. Architects not only design the interior of a building, but also work on the surroundings– today this is popularly called 'landscape architecture'.Landscape architecture includes designing gardens and enhancing the surroundings of buildings.
Building architects are of two types:
Residential (design housing apartments)
Commercial (designing offices and corporate buildings)
There are alsoindustrial designers, who create blueprints for factories and plants for companies.
An architects’ client list will comprise housing developers, builders, structural engineers and landowners. Once the design is prepared, the architect has to present it to the concerned government officer of the area, who will check on the prescribed specification of space utilisation; construction begins once the design is approved by the officer.
Deadlines are an essential part of this profession,"Deadlines depend upon the volume of work that an architect has been assigned," explains Thakare. Usually this ranges between six months to one year.
How to start?
If you are a beginner, it is advisable to work under an expert."This is more of a hands-on profession, and one has to have practical experience," says Mathur."By working with an expert, you not only gain experience, but also earn contacts," adds Thakare. For any architect, the'word of mouth' is the best way of getting clients.“It is your efficient work and goodwill that will get you the clients," explains Mathur.
Remuneration
As the profession in demand frenzy, the money earned is visibly good.An architect earns from a percentage of the total budget of the whole construction.“In case you are designing only the building, then you will get around three percent, and if you are designing the landscape as well, then it will be around ten per cent of the total budget,” explains Thakare.
Training requirements
There are a number of institutes inMumbai, offering courses in architecture. The minimum qualification for a five-year degree course is 10+2. Candidates should also clear the CET (MAH-AR-CET) that is held at the state level.
Future prospects
With the steady boom of real estate, the need for architecture is growing.“In the next three to five years, this profession will see a phenomenal rise,” predicts Mathur.“Shelter is one of the three major requirements of a human being and architects devise the last one. Therefore, it is a profession which will always be in demand,” philosophies Thakare.
Apart from these, architects can also double as Interior Designers as they have a knack for space utilisation.
