According to an official at the Indian Aviation Academy, Mumbai along with the basic criteria of education and physical fitness, one also needs to possess great communication skills too. Minimum age for Private Pilot License is 16 years and it is 17 years for a Commercial Pilot License. Your vision in one eye must be perfect. In general medical terminology, it is called 6/6 eyesight. The path
The first step in pilot training is zeroing in on a good flying club after which you move ahead towards acquiring of Student Pilot Licence (SPL).To get a SPL, you have to appear for a written theory examination in air regulations, aviation meteorology and air navigation and air technical.
You also need to obtain a medical certificate of fitness from doctors designated by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Only two bodies in India -- Air Force Central Medical Establishment, New Delhi and the Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bangalore --are authorised to give you a medical fitness certificate.
Along with these, you need a security clearance and also have to clear an oral examination and an aptitude test. If everything falls in place, you will be granted the SPL. After obtaining an SPL, a candidate can get the Private Pilot Licence (PPL).This includes 60 hours of flying comprising 20 hours of dual flying, 20 hours of solo flying and five hours cross-country flying. Theoretical examinations have to be passed in subjects like air regulation, navigation, aviation meteorology, aircraft and engines.
After PPL, another 190 hours of flying training is required for Commercial Pilot's Licence (CPL) i.e., a consolidated 250 hours of flying training. A flight radio operator's licence and radio telephone licence have to be obtained. During CPL, the candidate should have exposure to a range of aircrafts and fulfill other conditions like specified hours of solo flying, cross country flying and height flying. Theoretical papers have to be cleared and medical tests passed. It usually takes two to three years to complete the required flying hours and classroom learning. Entry to the PPL course is through an entrance test, conducted by the DGCA, New Delhi. It is based on English, general knowledge, maths, physics and chemistry.
Institutes
Located at Fursatgunj near Rai Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh), the Indira Gandhi Rashtra Udyaan Academy (IGRUA) is one of the most well-known and reputed flying institutes. Private institutes are strewn all across the country, such as the Bombay Flying Club, Indian Aviation Academy, Delhi Flying Club, Ahmedabad Flying Club and Lucknow Flying Club, Flytech Aviation Academy etc.
The course duration is two years at IGRUA. This institute takes about 20 students every six months (January and July sessions). IGRUA trains you to be a pilot, but the DGCA issues the license. PPL: 40 hours of total flying, including 20 hours solo. From these 20 hours, 10 hours cross-country solo flying. Plus written exams for five subjects. CPL: 250 hours of total flying, including 150 hours solo included 40 hrs cross country solo flying plus 20 hrs instrument flying and the written papers.
Damages
At IGRUA, it takes about Rs 1.5 to get a private license. For a CPL, you need to pay Rs 10 lakh (inclusive of boarding and lodging, if learning in another city). These licenses have to be renewed every year, with at least 10 hours of additional flying. The pilot has to spend a minimum of Rs 2,500 for every hour of flying after the license. That makes it Rs 25,000 for the pilot to spend every year to renew the license. The institute also offers many scholarships for students. For more details log on to:
