From animated characters in films, special effects in music videos, computer games to website designing, business presentations and training programmes, multimedia is everywhere. The diverse applications of multimedia in several sectors has revolutionised every aspect of life around us.
The Scope
"The Indian market opened up to multimedia with the establishment of several IT as well as research and development set-ups. Today the demand for multimedia professionals is more in IT companies who are into software. And their need will increase with the companies' growth. The requirement in animation field is comparatively less now but it is likely to soar in the next three to four years," reveals Prof Ravi Poovaiah, Head of Industrial Design Centre (IDC) at IIT, Mumbai.
Seconds Sushma DeSouza, Assistant Vice President, Human Resources, UTV Software Communications Limited, "The multimedia industry is witnessing rapid growth in India due to huge expansion in the offshore multimedia development business and its increased usage within India. The scene will probably move like it has in South Korea. There would be multimedia demand from every conceivable content distribution platform. The corresponding demand for manpower, which is already high, will rise further."
Naturally this profession – a blend of art and technology - is attracting not only freshers but also professionals qualified in other fields like architecture, engineering, management and advertising publishing. "It is a field that provides an opportunity to use one's creative skills and explore new ideas and concepts. There is never a dull moment," says Pradipta Das Sarkar, an architecture graduate now doing his Master's in visual communications at IDC and specialising in interaction design.
Equally enthusiastic is Bilal Chougle who quit his IT degree midway to join a course in 3D animation at Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics. He says, “The course is very intensive but I am enjoying it since there are many opportunities to express your ideas and thoughts creatively. And career prospects are good."
Work Profile
Job profiles in this field are diverse. One can be a video producer/ editor, software editor/ mixer, audio and video specialist, animator, environment designer, web designer, modeller, rigging artiste, visualiser, graphic designer, creative/ art director or a studio manager. In addition to working in an organisation one can also freelance or set up one’s own unit.
Eligibilty and Training
Cashing in on the demand, a host of institutes are offering short-term certificate courses, long-term intensive programmes and tailor-made modules as well. The eligibility criteria for admission varies according to the kind of course and institute one opts for. While some are open to SSC/ HSC pass students, others are only for graduates or those with professional degrees like fine arts, architecture, design, engineering, etc.
Apart from academic qualifications the institutes also prefer students with a high creative quotient, basic computer knowledge and good communication skills.
The fee for the courses range from Rs 5000 to Rs two-and-a-half lakhs, depending on the kind of course and institutes one enrols in.
These courses cover subjects like graphics, interactive design, 2D and 3D animation, filmmaking, special effects, game design, web design, modelling, rigging, texturising and digital portfolio development.
However only a handful of institutes like Industrial Design Centre (IIT Mumbai), National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad have been encouraging academic thinking in this field. IDC has introduced two postgraduate degrees this year - Master of Design in animation and interaction design. They are also planning to introduce graduate courses soon.
