So you're out of college life into the big bad world where you need to acquire a job which not only helps you earn a decent living but also satisfies your intellectual needs. Now that you're on a look-out for your dream job, you need one really important thing - a resume. Now imagine this situation: You have this one lone soul in human resources, who sits with 100 resume applications on his table. So you have a one in 100 chance of getting selected. So how do you improve your chances of getting selected?
Q. What should the resume content be about?
A. It's about YOU. If you're a fresher, it is unlikely that you have job experience, so you should include all your educational qualifications and extra curricula's. "If you have some job experience, then don't just include where you worked, mention what you did there and how you enhanced the company," says the HR head of a popular company.
Q. Biggest mistake...?
A. Some people tend to forget the job objective. A job objective is what gives employers an outlook into what you wish to accomplish with the company, and how you will help enrich it during your stint.
Q. What is the ideal format for a resume for;
a) Students
b) Professionals?
a) For students the ideal resume format is as follows:
  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of Birth
  • Contact Number
  • Email Address
  • Objectives
  • Educational Qualifications
  • Academic Achievements
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Hobbies
  • Work Experience (if any)
b) For professionals or people with prior experience in their fields, the resume format is as follows:
  • Name.
  • Address
  • Contact Number
  • Email Address
  • Career Objectives
  • Work Experience
  • Educational Qualifications
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Hobbies
  • Names of References
Q. What font should we use when writing a resume?
A. Ideally the font to be used should either be Times New Roman, Book Antiqua or Garamond. The font size should not exceed 12 for headings and 11 for content.
Q. Is a cover letter required to be attached with a resume? If yes, then what must it contain?
A. When one is sending an email to the employer or one is posting the resume to the employer a cover letter is a must so that the employer gets a basis to read your resume. Your cover letter should be formal and should include the following:
  • Name
  • Qualifications (last achieved)
  • Designation of interest
  • Two to three lines on oneself.
With these tips, the margin of error in your resume should be reduced by 90 percent. So go ahead, knock the socks off your employers!  More on Resume Writing Tips
