Processing Times Getting Visa For Canada

For information on the number of months or days required to approve or refuse applications for permanent residence and applications for temporary residence in all categories for the last 12 months. 

Processing times for the services delivered at a visa office depend on the volume of new applications received and the individual complexity of the applications. 

The times indicated below are typical wait times based on estimates for applications currently in process in New Delhi and Chandigarh.  These estimates apply to average applications. There will always be a small number of applications where complications will delay the case.  When this happens we will endeavour to advise applicants of the problem and provide a realistic estimation of the expected processing time.

Visitors

You can usually expect an Initial Response in 5 working days from date of your application.

We encourage you to consult our actual processing times for temporary resident applications in New Delhi and in Chandigarh for the last 12 months.

Students

You can usually expect an Initial Response in 10 working days from the date of application.

If provisionally accepted, medical examinations are usually required;

We encourage you to consult our actual processing times for study permit applications in New Delhi and in Chandigarh for the last 12 months.

Temporary workers

You can usually expect an Initial Response in 10 working days from the date of application. 

There is currently a high volume of temporary worker applications and the predicted time for an initial response is higher than previously.  We will continue to provide a realistic expectation of time required to process these applications as the volume changes.

We encourage you to consult our actual processing times for temporary work permit applications in New Delhi and in Chandigarh for the last 12 months.

Temporary Workers – Religious Workers

 You can usually expect an Initial Response in 15 working days from the date of application. 

Live-in caregivers

You can usually expect an Initial Response in 10 working days from the date of application. 

Live-in Caregiver applicants generally require an interview. The current estimated processing time from receipt of a completed application to finalisation is 30 months.

Group applications
of workers or visitors [three or more applicants; i.e. performing artists or film crews and software workers]
You can usually expect an Initial Response in 10 working days from date of application.
Travel document for permanent residents You can usually expect an Initial Response in 5 working days from the date of application.
Medical examination results: Estimated Processing Times
Cases where only a first medical examination is required 10 working days from date of medical examination
Cases where a further, more detailed medical examination is required 4 months or more from date of medical examination
   
Please be reminded that some exceptional medical conditions may warrant up to 6 months of follow-up prior to a final medical decision

Skilled Workers and other categories

On December 3, 2003, our Minister announced the coming into force of important amendments to the transitional regulations pertaining to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). The amendments allow federal economic class applicants who filed their application for permanent residence before January 1, 2002, to be assessed against the selection criteria of the former Regulations or those of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, whichever are more favourable.  

We currently estimate processing skilled worker applications according to the following time frames:

Confirmation of receipt of application 6 months
First review 57 months
Interview 68 months
