MBA From UK

Our Career Consultant tells you why pursuing an MBA from UK is more advantageous

A recent MBA recruiter’s survey reports that there has been a 15 per cent increase in demand worldwide for MBAs in the past ten years. Joseph Wharton founded the first business school in 1881 at the University of Pennsylvania. Realising the need for specialised business courses, the UK government then set up the London Business School and Manchester Business School in 1964.

Since then the MBA degree has been the most sought after degree worldwide. The US MBA is traditionally a two-year curriculum with an optional internship position in summer. European and UK MBA schools on the other hand, usually follow a one-year curriculum and require candidates to have many years of work experience before they can be admitted.

A student with a GMAT score of around 600, work experience of three to five years and a three-year bachelor degree stands a good chance of admission in City University London (Cass Business School). But this same student would most likely not qualify for admission to US top 20 B-Schools. UK universities tend to receive a smaller number of applicants from India as compared to US B-Schools and are less competitive. Indian students tend to be suspicious of a school that does not have a high GMAT requirement.

However, many British business schools are not convinced that the GMAT actually tests the parameters that interest them most. Their philosophy is that standardised testing tries to fit everyone into the same mould, whereas they are more interested in individuals."Our job is to produce rounded and knowledgeable citizens for the 21st century, not to process stereotypes," says Professor Hopwood, the Dean of the Said Business School (University of Oxford).

Students that are admitted to UK graduate schools of business tend to be more mature and have more work experience than their counterparts in other parts of the world, but they also tend to have lower GMAT scores. There seems to be more flexibility in the admissions process in the UK. Student requirements are taken into consideration, and students with unusual educational backgrounds are considered sympathetically. There is scope to get into a reasonable school even if you have only 15 years of education or a low GMAT score, especially if you have good work experience. The application process is quite straightforward.

Says Anurag Saxena, a student pursuing an MBAat the University of Edinburgh,"Well, the basic reason for me to consider UK as compared to US is for its one-year MBA curriculum. Also due to two-year nature of US-MBAs, they are quite expensive. There are no direct parameters for comparing both MBAs. They are quite different in the overall sense; for example, the average experience (and hence the age) for UK MBAs is more. US schools heavily depend upon GMAT scores whereas in UK they take a holistic view. It makes complete sense to pursue MBA after an optimum work experience so that one can directly (in a way) evaluate already gained leadership skills with what one should have, which fills the gap in a very efficient way.

The fact that most of EU MBAs are of one-year is advantageous in the sense that they are extremely challenging. The curriculum keeps us engaged and hence makes us learn effective time-management skills. We are exposed to an invigorating learning environment where everyone strives hard to achieve best results in least time. It is challenging me intellectually, showing me a brand new way of looking at the world around me, and allowing me to experiment with new ideas."

When choosing a business school in the UK, pay very careful attention to the curriculum of the MBA. There are some important differences in the MBA curriculum between the US and UK B-Schools. Says Diana Holton, Press Information Officer at Warwick Business School,"We emphasise team work and syndicate group exercises, compared to US schools which tend to focus more on individual development and one-on-one competition. Finally we tend to use the 'case method' approach less rigidly than many US schools - building more academic research into the teaching sessions. Case examples, though, are more international and less US-oriented than in US B-schools."

Working in the UK

The UK now has many programmes through which you can stay back in the UK and work after you graduate. The Training and Work Experience Scheme (TWES) and the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) are such programmes which allow students to work for one to two years after graduating. Getting the traditional work permit after graduating may still be difficult in the UK. However, if you completed an HND, degree course, master’s or PhD in Scotland you are eligible for a two year work permit after you graduate. If you graduate from any of the top 50 MBA programmes listed by the UK immigration department, you get an automatic one year work permit after you graduate (under the HSMP scheme). There are a few other special programmes such as the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme (SEGS) and Innovators Scheme as well which allow you to stay back in the UK after you graduate. You can visit www.workingintheuk.gov.uk for more information on work permits and work regulations in the UK.
