Over the past few years, India has seen a great influx of international universities which have either set up campuses here or have established successful tie-ups with top Indian institutes; be it the Wharton and London School of Business tie-up with Indian School of Business or Wigan & Leigh College setting up a campus in India.
In this global scenario, a few Indian institutes decided to take the plunge and venture out to set up campuses abroad. In a first of its kind endeavour, and Science MAHE- Manipal set up a campus in Dubai which was established in September 2000. Following suit, in 2002, the third best engineering university in India chose Dubai for its first international campus...Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) Pilani opened a foreign branch of their university providing accredited academic programmes and degrees in Dubai. Mahatma Gandhi University, a distance-learning institute recognised by the University Grants Commission also has a campus in Dubai. The premiere institute of management, SP Jain Centre of Management also has a branch operating in Dubai.
Knowledge Village, Dubai's prestigious education zone has seen these top Indian universities setting up additional campuses overseas. Dubai being an excellent example of globalisation, offers various opportunities to the graduates of these institutes for commercial success in the future. Dubai's vibrancy, its highly developed services sector, high quality of infrastructure and the huge growth opportunities it offers make it the ideal location for these universities. The Knowledge Village is one of the most unique places fostering education wherein leading universities and training institutes from all over the world stand next to each other, creating perhaps the first global campus providing a vast range of educational services like a fully equipped 450 seat auditorium, a food court, a shopping mall, conference facilities etc. Being in the vicinity of large initiatives like DIC and DMC, Knowledge Village provides greater and better learning opportunities to its students.
The programmes offered by some of these institutions are truly unique. SP Jain, Dubai for example, offers in its finance stream two super-specialisations, namely wealth management and investment banking. In the marketing stream too it gives the student a choice to super-specialise in either retail management or hospitality management.
BITS Pilani has provided all the integrated first degree programmes with a practice school option. The two courses are Practice School I and Practice School II wherein a student goes to Practice School I of two months duration during the summer following second year and to Practice School II of five and a half months' duration during the final year. It imparts a skill-set of highly relevant engineering concepts and trains students to apply these concepts in the real world, thus merging the two as a part of the curriculum.
BITS Pilani Dubai offers the same courses as BITS Pilani - India. For instance they have a bachelors degree in computer science, electrical and electronics engineering, and electronics and instrumentation engineering.. These programmes are taught over a period of eight semesters and the admission criteria are that the student has to have a minimum of 60 per cent in the 12th grade examination (from a recognised board) and have good proficiency in English. They also offer merit-based scholarships to students.
The degrees and programmes offered by MAHE Dubai are BBA, BSc IT, BSC Biotechnology, BA in Fashion Design and Technology, BA in Interior Design and BEd. At the masters level, they have the MBA degree and an MSc in IT. A student can opt for the doctoral/ PhD programmes too.
Apart from the BEd programmes, the bachelor degree programmes have an entry requirement of above 50 per cent in the class 12 board examination. For the BEd and the master’s programme, a prior bachelor's degree is compulsory. The university would also check your English language proficiency. Merit-based scholarships are available for bachelor degree programmes only.
In spite of being a fairly new addition to Knowledge Village, SP Jain Dubai is managing well with a batch of 100 students, across various specialisations. The one-year rigorous programme offers students a choice from three main specialisation areas such as Finance, Marketing and Information Technology with the super-specialisations mentioned earlier.
Another unique quality associated with this institute is that it is offering students Arabic language skills to prepare them for a future in Middle Eastern countries. Getting placements for their graduates is an integral and important part of SP Jain Dubai.
The admission guidelines of S.P. Jain Dubai state that graduates who have not taken the CAT or GMAT will be administered an aptitude test. The results of these tests along with academic credentials will decide whether they will be called for the next round of the admission process comprising of a written essay, group discussion, and personal interview.
The fact that these Indian institutes have opened up new avenues abroad is just one of the benefits to our students. The large number of students who are missing out on being a part of these institutions in India due to major competition will find these campuses the answer to their prayers. On the downside the cost of education in these institutes is high as compared to the fees charged in India.
